State agencies partner to crush outdated child safety seats

RICHMOND – In support of Virginia’s Highway Safety Challenge, the Virginia Department of Health (VDH), Virginia State Police (VSP) and the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) are partnering to encourage parents to inspect their child safety seats as part of National Child Passenger Safety Week, Sept. 21- 27, 2008.

VDH, VSP and VDOT will host a child safety seat crushing event at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 27, at Fairfield Commons Mall (old Eastgate Mall) off of Laburnum Avenue and Nine Mile Road.

Outdated and damaged child safety seats will be crushed, along with those seats involved in crashes and turned over by second hand stores. The seats will be crushed by the steamroller so that they cannot be borrowed, sold or redistributed for other children to use.

Highway safety is everyone’s responsibility. Take Virginia’s Highway Safety Challenge:

  • Buckle up
  • Avoid distractions
  • Share the road
  • Drive drug and alcohol free
  • Obey speed limits
